One must prepare mentally and physically for the actual event itself. For starters, there is bringing a healthy body to the operating table. One cannot be over physically prepared for the rigors involved with recovery from surgery. The body will be desperately trying to repair itself post-op and assisting yourself by maintaining a healthy diet and a bit of exercise (depending on your surgical condition) will boost your chances of a shorter more successful recovery. Ask your doctor for a list of foods and substances to be avoided prior to surgery to make sure you are indeed following a healthy diet. Substances like aspirin and nicotine can be counterproductive to the surgical process so be sure to avoid these at all costs. It is also imperative to manage your mental health. If you have children make sure to plan ahead for their care so that you aren't running in circles trying to care for them when you should be caring for yourself. If you have a job, make sure to request the appropriate amount of time off for recuperation. There's nothing like a deadline or missing an expected paycheck to shoot the stress level through the roof. Stress will be the one biggest factor that a recovering patient can try to eliminate prior to surgery that will lead to an exceptional recovery plan. Finally, listen to and follow all of your surgeon's instructions. Seek out reading materials on your own to supplement what your health care provider has suggested.
