Effects of Caffeine when trying to get Pregnant

home > reproductive health > caffeine trying to get pregnant

Caffeine is believed to effect both male and female fertility.

Caffeine, as with many things in life, taken in moderation seems not to adversely effect either male or female.

female fertility

An article [*pdf] published by the Organization of Teratology Information Services in December 2001, stated that some studies suggest high levels of caffeine consumption, greater than 300 mg / day, may make it harder to conceive, but it added these findings are not proven - and that low to moderate consumption did not seem to reduce the chance of conceiving.

Caffeine is common in many foods, drinks and medicines, for example:
  • an 8oz. cup of coffee - 85-120mg of caffeine
  • tea - 20-90mg
  • 12oz Coke - 45mg
It's easy to see drinking perhaps 5 cups of coffee and having bar of chocolate could put you well over the "moderate caffeine consumption bracket".

male fertility

Effects of caffeine on male fertility are even less certain. Some studies have shown that caffeine speeds up the rate of movement of sperm, other a believed to have shown the opposite effect. As mentioned before, moderation appears to be the key.
