Aging Male Syndromehome > mens health > male agingThe aging male confronts many changes to the body that are under expressed in the general mass media. This lack of representation largely stems from a lack of information or ably translated test results. Aging Male Syndrome is a collection of symptoms that occur in the latter portion of a male's life that are directly linked to the decline of testosterone in a man's body. Symptoms of Aging Male Syndrome are rather diverse but can include: unexpected weight gain, problems sleeping, loss of libido, irritability, impotence, nervousness, mood swings, hair loss, fatigue and depression. Other symptoms exist but if a collection of the mentioned symptoms are detected a physician should be sought. Once a physician is contacted a test can be run to detect the level of testosterone that is in the body and a plan for treatment can be obtained and followed. At this point detection of the hormone change and treatment plans run very parallel to that of treatment for menopause. Unfortunately for treatment of Aging Male Syndrome there has not been nearly as much research as has been done for menopause. Regardless of the reasons, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) involving testosterone has not been proven to be either safe or effective. However, similar statements had to be made about HRT for women undergoing treatment for their menopause by replacing the hormone estrogen. Time has shown that HRT for female menopause has been effective in balancing out the rollercoaster of emotions and body changes that occur as the body prepares for its final stage of life. Men that feel they are having a rough transition into the latter portion of their years should feel confident to contact their physicians regarding Aging Male Syndrome and potential treatments that can make the life transition easier. More information about aging changes in the male reproductive system can be found on medline, or in the menshealthnetwork.org flyer: Men, Aging, and Testosterone by Dr. Robert Tan [*pdf] |
