How to become your own Dentisthome > dentistry > looking after your teethIf you are over 40 years old, then chances are your bad dental habits cost you hundreds (and maybe even thousands) of dollars at the dentist every year. Given today's skyrocketing dentistry prices and the fact that most people simply cannot afford private dental plans, it may be time to consider becoming your own dentist. Of course, this doesn't mean taking courses for do-it-yourself root canals! But there are some basic tips that can make your subsequent visits to the dentist as physically and financially painless as possible. This can be as straight forward as making sure you brush your teeth completely after every meal (especially breakfast and supper) and swishing your mouth with water immediately after eating or drinking anything that is especially sweet or high in sugar. Flossing regularly after supper and before you brush your teeth is also a must. There is no way around this. For those who always find flossing difficult or suffer from poor finger or hand dexterity, there are floss wands available today that can actually make the process easier. Once you have these basics down, you can also throw in several other dental care tools for good measure. Several sugar free gums have been proven to reduce the risk of cavities and are actually approved by the American Dental Association. Fluoride-based mouthwashes have also been proven very affective in fighting cavities and gum disease and can very easily be stored in your desk at work, to be taken out after those power lunches. All these procedures really don't take any longer than five minutes at a time. Keep that in mind the next time you find yourself waiting in your dentist's lobby for three new cavities that surely could have been avoided. |
