Sudden Infant Death Syndromehome > child health > sidsIt would seem that there is no end to potential disasters that can arise when parents and parents to be consider the health of their infants. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is the pronouncement upon infants that have died after birth that are less than one year old where no defining cause could be ascertained. Although no single cause has been identified for the syndrome there are risk factors that can be reduced to help parents prevent this potential tragedy in the home. The good news is that over the past few decades there has been a general trend towards the decline of SIDS occurrences. This promising news reveals some trends regarding awareness about the contraction of the syndrome and that preventative measures can be taken. Expecting parents should seek medical help early and often throughout their pregnancies. This will keep the parents to be apprised of the pre-natal health of their child and raise any warning flags well before the child is born. Obviously harsh substances such as heroin, tobacco and cocaine should absolutely be avoided while a mother is pregnant. Use of these substances by pregnant mothers has been positively been linked to higher incidences of SIDS. And if at all possible, women should avoid becoming pregnant in their teenage years as well as waiting longer periods between having children. Both of these factors lead to increased frequency of a child's contraction of SIDS. Parents that have had a child recently would do well to follow several guidelines about their child's welfare to try to prevent the syndrome from occurring in their homes. Infants should always be placed to sleep on their backs with no blankets, pillows or other potentially constricting materials. Insure that your infant's mattress is firm. Overly soft mattresses tend to have a stifling effect on an infant, especially if they manage to roll over onto their bellies. Cigarettes use in the house and around the child should absolutely be avoided. As always contact a qualified medical advisor if you need detailed information about SIDS. |
